MANUAL LYMPH
DRAINAGE
Manual lymph drainage (MLD), was developed by Drs. Emil and Estrid Vodder in the 1930s. This precise technique is a rhythmic, gentle massage that has a profound effects on the immune system, nervous system and connective tissues. Recognized by medical communities and the international spa wellness sect, Dr. Vodder’s MLD is indicated for over 60 different pathologies including: Pre/Post Operative Procedures, Sport Injuries, Inflammatory Processes, Dermatological Concerns, Fatigue, Chronic and Acute Pain Management, Headaches, Dense and Engorged Breast Tissue, Cellulite, Sinusitis, Burns, Scars, and much more.
The Dr. Vodder technique is unique in that it influences many systems within the body, not only the lymphatic system. Benefits include an increased availability of nutrients and oxygen to the cells by removing cellular waste, debris, and excess fluid within the tissue. The sympatholytic effect of MLD resets the nervous system by quieting the sympathetic nervous system, allowing the parasympathetic nervous system to dominate calming and healing the body. Another benefit of Dr. Vodder's MLD is the analgesic effect. By triggering mechanoreceptors, a slow rhythmic override occurs in the central nervous system blocking out pain receptors.
Treatments usually last between 30-90 minutes. Initially, a series of treatments (3-6) are scheduled at frequent intervals so the Lymphatic System has an opportunity to “strengthen”itself. You can think of it as a lymphatics work out plan. After, the series has been completed a maintenance program can be established. The frequency and length of the sessions will be based upon individual needs and will be discussed between you and your practitioner. Heavy pressure will NOT be applied to the tissues. MLD is a gentle, non-invasive, rhythmic treatment designed to increase lymph flow within the body.
Contraindications include:
Acute Infection
Thrombosis
Active Cancer
Congestive Heart Failure
These are absolute and cannot be treated with MLD if you have the above mentioned.
